The Torch

1 Corinthians 9:25 – Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. (NIV)

The Edge

Recent storms that brought rain, freezing temperatures, and large amounts of snow have made keeping the roads clear a challenge. Today, we entered a new phase — rain and warmer temperatures, which may at a later date be called the January thaw. As I drove to work early this morning in the darkness, I noticed something hidden in previous days: the edge of the road.

The Red Boxes

1 Corinthians 11:2 – I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you. (NIV)

Tradition has a way of finding a place in many of the seasonal events in which we participate. In our family though, Christmas seems to have quite a few — from the trimming of the tree, to the Christmas dishes I set the table with, and the candle that is lit in remembrance of family who have gone home to be with Jesus.

The Relationship

Matthew 6:9-13 – This, then, is how you should pray: "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not in temptation, but deliver us from the evil one." (NIV)

What if my prayers always started with "Lord, I trust You to provide me with what I need", rather than "Lord, this is what I want"?

What I Need

Recently, I rode my bicycle in a charity event for work. Not knowing what the route would be like, I trained on hills and on rough and smooth roads. I also had my bicycle tuned up just before the event. The day was overcast and gloomy, but the fall trees and country roads were spectacular. I biked at times with other bikers, but for the most part, I biked alone, taking in the magnificent fall colours and scenery.
